Novak Djokovic: Move Over There’s a New Sheriff in Town

Wimbledon– Not a bad couple of days for Novak Djokovic. On Friday, with his victory against Tsonga, Nole guaranteed himself the #1 world ranking and today to celebrate, he won his first championship at Wimbledon. Djokovic defeated defending champion Rafa Nadal in 4 sets 6-4, 6-1, 1-6, 6-3. Just like we had written in our preview of the match, Nadal spent a large portion of the match outside of his comfort zone, attempting to hit bigger shots to impact the Djokovic wall. With the increase in pace and/or spin from Nadal more unforced errors crept into his play, especially in the big moments as Nadal noted after the match, “I was probably a little too nervous at 5-4 in the first set and 4-3 in the final set. That moment the match was there, I have chances … I made a few mistakes and he played well, thats it.” For a guy like Rafa, he only gets nervous when he’s not 100% certain of his ability to succeed at the task at hand. At the same time, Djokovic was operating very steadily mentally and physically. His thought process was so clear in the largest moments, evidenced by his serve and volley changeup while serving for the championship at 5-3, 30-15 in the final set. It was a brilliantly executed tactical play that proved that Nole was the one in charge. Congratulations to Djokovic on a continued amazing 2011 and his first Wimbledon Championship!
