New York, US Open — The #1 ranked duo of Bob and Mike Bryan defeated the Indian/Pakistani team of Rohan Bopanna and Aisam Quereshi in two tough sets 7-6(5), 7-6(4). This title marked the 65th title for the Bryan brothers. In front of a capacity crowd at Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York, the two teams produced electric tennis. Power, touch, quick volleys, overhead smashes, outstanding serves and returns were all a part of this final. This was a great display of doubles on the world stage. Well done by both teams.

Over the last two weeks much of the focus has been on the team from India and Pakistan. Historically the two countries do not get along politically, but Bopanna and Quereshi have proven to the world that peace can exist. The symbolism of their success as a doubles team leads to the hope of peace throughout the world.

Quereshi of Pakistan added this during the trophy presentation, “I don’t want to take any limelight away from these guys [Bryan brothers], but I just want to say something on behalf of all Pakistanis, that every time I come here I feel that there is a very wrong perception about Pakistan being a terrorist country. We are very friendly, loving, and caring people and we want peace in this world as much as you all want and may God bless us all. Thank you.”

The crowd roared its approval. Talk about a powerful and beautiful statement that sports can make. Pakistan is lucky to have such a thoughtful person as a representative of their country.
