A Philosophical Journey: A Reflection on Andre Agassi’s Impact

A Philosophical Journey: A Reflection on Andre Agassi’s Impact

Arthur Ashe once said, “Success is a journey, not a destination. The doing is often more important than the outcome. From what we get, we can make a living; what we give, however, makes a life.”

Andre Agassi showed us that even the best stumble and fall, but they learn to pick themselves up, and reinvent themselves into something more. He offers a Zen perspective on life as well as on the tennis court. He is living proof that the process and hard work is the true measure of success rather than winning. He showed us focus and resilience. He had his share of obstacles, defied expectations, and let his soul shine for others to see. His style of play was idolized and became a benchmark for how the game would be played. He loved to punish the ball as well as his opponents, running them from side to side until their legs gave out. But don’t judge him by his approach to winning a tennis match. To say this man had a big heart would be an understatement. He is an emotional, reflective man, leaving a great legacy on the tennis court, and arguably an equally impressive one off the court. He created a foundation to give children an education, a chance in life, to change their lives for the better and give them hope by using his status and earnings for good. Unselfishly, he made sure kids who couldn’t have the opportunity at an education could not be constrained by restrictions. Agassi showed us that those restrictions are like chains and chains can be broken.

As Andre spoke his final words on court, I saw Andre’s emotions flowing out due to the moment and from the respect and appreciation the tennis fans of New York showed. Tears ran from my eyes and I felt like I was in the stadium watching a friend wave goodbye. A friend who now was setting sail into the wind for another journey, leaving behind the inspiration of what is important in life. He poured all of himself in to what he was doing, while making it a priority to giving back to others. He showed the world what the strength and desire of the human spirit can do. Agassi’s journey as a tennis player will never be forgotten, and his impact as a person gave and continues to give others hope in life.
