Professional Tennis Has Too Much Obscurity to be Truly Successful

The truth.

In an interesting article by Bruce Jenkins at CNNISI.com, he discusses the difficulties of following the men’s and women’s professional tennis tours full time. At certain parts of the year there can be three tournaments on the ATP tour and three tournaments on the WTA tour per week. This effectively eliminates the casual tennis fan due to the sheer frequency of these events that are spread across the globe. One of tennis’ major assets is that it is a worldwide sport, yet at the same time this very asset makes the tour virtually impossible to follow by a regular sports fan. Tennis needs a leader who can bring the sport together and package it as one entity that makes sense to the ‘regular’ tennis fan.

The politics in tennis are very complicated because of all the governing bodies and tours. It’s basically a complete mess and yet the sport continues to thrive because of the popularity of the Grand Slams as well as the engaging athletes that play the sport. People can relate to the individualistic nature of the sport. Everyone can appreciate the blend of physical, mental, and emotional discipline required to compete at the highest levels, yet the fans have no real way of truly appreciating what they see because of the disorganized nature of the tours and tennis in general. Even as a tennis enthusiast, it is difficult to navigate my way through the year. Hopefully, GEMTennis.com can continue to evolve and simplify this great sport for the everyday sports fan.
