Oh How Sweet It Is, #12: Serena Williams

World #1 Serena Williams ended Justine Henin’s dream run with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 triumph in just over two hours of play. In the past, Henin attacked the Williams game with great variety and precision, mostly focusing on constructing points to break down the powerful Williams. However this match featured the “new” Justine Henin that now focuses on an attacking game. Henin has had great success against most opponents on the WTA tour, but Serena Williams is a whole different player. Williams used her brut power and sheer will to overcome the constant ebbs and flows of momentum as well a lack of rhythm from her opponent. In the end, the difference in the this match was the Williams serve and when she needed it most, she served her best. Once again Williams has proven what a true champion she is. The 2010 Australian Open was her 12th Grand Slam title which ties her with Billie Jean King who was in attendance amongst other great legends of the game including Margaret Court (winner of 22 Grand Slams). Congratulations to Serena Williams!
FUTURE OUTLOOK: For Justine Henin the ‘comeback’ road has just begun. After her next tournament she will be ranked around 40 in the world. Look for her to continue her push to becoming a more offensive player as she pursues an elusive Wimbledon title. It’ll be a tall order for someone so small, but if anyone can find the grit and pure intelligence to carve up a Wimbledon title it would be Henin.
For Serena Williams it has always been about big titles. Look for her to continue her limited schedule in an effort to produce her best tennis at the biggest moments. Roland Garros is up next and don’t be surprised if she makes a run to win her second French Open in May.
