Federer Escapes

World #1 Roger Federer needed 2 hours and 44 minutes to take out hard hitting Russian Igor Andreev 4-6, 6-2, 7-6(2), 6-0. Early in the match, Andreev dominated the play with his heavy ground strokes and shot making ability. At first Federer reacted by trying to out hit his opponent, but as the match continued the Swiss star was content with playing spectacular defense to make the Russian hit ball after ball. Eventually Andreev succumbed in the second set 6-2, however the Russian took an early lead in the third set. Almost immediately, Federer broke serve to even out the set and then at 4-3, Federer broke again. Federer served for the third set at 5-3, but he was stopped by the stubborn Russian. As the momentum shifted towards Andreev for the second time in the set, he had three set points at 6-5, but could not convert on any of them. As it goes, Federer seized his opportunity and stormed to a 7-2 victory in the third set tiebreak. The fourth set was a display of vintage Federer hitting spectacular winners versus the broken down Andreev. Federer broke in the first game and subsequently finished the set 6-love with ease. Overall, Federer didn’t play his most consistent tennis. It was his variety and championship belief that overcame the tough Russian. Look for Federer to crush his opponent in the next round. Enjoy the action!
