And the Winner Is?
2010 Australian Open
by Parsa Samii, GEM Tennis
The plot for the 2010′s first Grand Slam is all set. For the first time in a long time, the men’s tournament has favorites beyond the usual Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer. Andy Roddick, Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, Juan Martin Del Potro, Gael Monfils, Fernando Verdasco, Jo-Wilfred Tsonga and the red hot Nikolay Davydenko all have a legitimate opportunity to take the title down under. As far as matchups go, this year’s draw presents many potentially dramatic moments for the tennis world to enjoy.
On the women’s side, the story that dominates the headlines is the rebirth of the once dominant women in the game. Justine Henin is back and she’s looking to establish her place atop the WTA rankings once again. Kim Clijsters, the 2009 US Open champion, continues her comeback from giving birth, Maria Sharapova is looking to regain her once dominant form after recovering from shoulder surgery and of course Serena Williams looks to put the memories of last year’s US Open to rest. The stage is set on the women’s side for one of these women to establish their strong hold of the women’s tour.
